Our advice on renovating your home with render

Renovating your home with render is a great way to give it new life and value. When it comes to rendering though, where should you start? We’ve compiled some tips on budget, colour, renders and more to help you renovate your home with render.

Get the house ready

Is your house a little old? Before you consider rendering, it’s best to square things up so that the shape matches with the modern finish of render. All the walls need to be dry, so if you’ve just done some brick patching the mortar will need to cure before you can render. In some cases, council approval is required to change the appearance of your home, so best to check before you get started.

Budget

Rendering is an economical way to renovate the exterior of any home as it provides lifetime value. The cost to render your home should equal 1% of the total value of the property. For example, if your property is valued at $500,000 then the budget for rendering should be no more than $5000. If 1% doesn’t provide you with a big enough budget to complete the whole exterior, consider only rendering the façade walls to save costs – this will ensure the street-front view looks great. For the rest of the house, you could bag off the walls or leave them as is.

Colour

It will also create a stained and dirty appearance. One way to add colour is by painting the render, which also adds a layer of protection. If you choose to render and paint, know there is a wait time as the render cures and sets. Typically, this wait time is 4 weeks. If the house needs to be re-sellable then using a contemporary colour scheme will help. Also, when thinking about colour, consider the garden and the neighbouring houses – do you want your home to contrast or complement the surroundings?

Acrylic renders

Acrylic renders are around thanks to modern technology. They are more versatile than cement-based renders and can cover many types of surfaces, including blue board, polystyrene, masonry, brick and painted surfaces. Acrylic render tends to be the more expensive option though as they add a bespoke look to your home exterior with different textures and colour. It is safe to add colour to acrylic renders as they don’t have the same issues when exposed to the weather like cement-based render. Acrylic renders are durable, crack resistant, flexible, high impact tolerant, weather-resistant and have anti-fungal properties.

More than just outside walls

Render can be used on more than your home’s external walls. Remember to include the front fence, letter box and retaining walls to complete the new look of your home. Render can also be used inside your home. Use it to create a feature wall or update old internal brickwork.

Increases the value and life of your home

Did you know rendering adds value to your home and property for such a small investment? It also transforms the exterior aesthetics of your home, hiding any imperfect brickwork and creating a modern look.

Render is also practical. Rendering your home protects if from the weather and general wear and tear over the years. It is like an additional layer of insulation. Render can stop dampness and moisture from seeping into the walls, preventing damage to the walls. All this protection can add years to your home.
